7 underrated SEO lessons

Over the years, the world of SEO has become increasingly diverse and vast, with numerous algorithm updates and strategies being developed on a regular basis. While every SEO Professional has their own go-to strategy that is also used by their peers on a regular basis, they also look for underrated and low-key SEO Strategies that will give them an advantage in maintaining their rankings. With SEO becoming more competitive than ever, having a few extra tricks up your sleeve can be extremely beneficial to the success of your campaign.

Here are some of the most fundamental, yet underutilized Search engine optimization lessons that you should seriously consider implementing (or improving) on your site:

  1. Internal linking: – This is probably one of the most basic SEO lessons I can provide. Yet, when done correctly, it has tremendous power. You could have the best content on the Internet, but it will be useless if no one can find it. Internal links come into play here. While most people concentrate solely on link building, they overlook the importance of connecting their own content and linking internally. It may not appear to be much, but internal links not only make it easier for your users to find relevant content on your site, but they also alert web crawlers that you have more great content on your site.
  2. External linking: – Many websites avoid external links as if they were the plague. They try to avoid these at all costs, or they simply use no follow tags for every external link, believing that it will harm their page in some way. The truth is quite the opposite. Linking to “good neighborhood” pages, i.e., relevant high-authority pages, tells Google that you value such resources, which increases your trust in Google’s eyes. If search engines trust your site, you will never have to worry about algorithm changes. Genuine, trustworthy sites link to others, and if you want Google to trust you, you should do the same.
  3. Social signals: – Facebook is more than just a great place to watch cat videos, and Pinterest is more than just a great place to find hundreds of recipes and DIY projects. They can be valuable allies in your quest to dominate SERPs. Matt Cutts has even stated that social signals are a ranking factor, and tens of studies have consistently demonstrated the same. Your following, activity, and shares will all have a significant impact. Getting traffic from other sources may be another ranking factor, as it indicates that you are a legitimate brand.
  4. Website Speed: – Website loading speed has grown in importance, and Google has declared that it is now one of the ranking factors in their Mobile First index. People are impatient, especially when using a smartphone to browse the web, so if your site takes too long to load, no one will read your incredibly awesome content. They will simply go back to Google and look at the next search result. Do not let the speed of your page cost you all that valuable traffic. When Mobile First is introduced, you will want to rank among the best among other quickly loading pages.
  5. Website Structure: – Site structure is frequently overlooked, despite its critical importance in how spiders crawl and index your site. The structure is beneficial not only to Google, but also to your users, as it allows them to navigate more easily and find related topics.  Consider having a website dedicated to dogs. Dog food, dog grooming, and dog training are all logical categories. If someone is looking for dog training advice, they will know exactly where to look. However, if your site is simply a collection of random dog-related posts, it will be difficult to find the same content about dog training tips.   6. Updating old content: – The freshness score is a significant ranking factor. You cannot expect a great piece of content to stay on the first page for a long time. Fresh content “degrades” over time, which means it loses value unless it is updated on a regular basis. How do I update outdated content? That is a topic for another day, but in summary: fix grammar errors, update facts, expand the topic with new content, repair broken links, and generally improve the way the content looked before. Fresh content is good content, so don’t let your articles go dormant. If you do not think it’s worth updating (for example, if the topic is outdated and no longer relevant), consider deleting the page or post entirely. To forward the link juice from the old URL, perform a 301 redirection to the homepage or another relevant topic.
  7. Optimize image alt tags and file names: – Be honest: you have at least one image on your site with the filename “12345.jpg” or something else that does not even begin to describe the image. We have all done it, and to be honest, this is possibly the most underutilized SEO tactic ever. When you are focused on the content, it is easy to overlook the images, but images make up a significant portion of that content. The filename and alt tag are extremely important because they can both tell Google what the image is about and hint at what the page is about. Why waste another great opportunity to use your keyword?

There are numerous SEO lessons, strategies and techniques available that can help your rankings. But keep in mind what is important. The basic SEO Lessons I just mentioned make up most of the algorithm. I know how easy it is to lose track of the ball and get side tracked by theories and secrets posted by the biggest SEO-experts; I have been there. Let this serve as a reminder that the majority of your SERP game will undoubtedly come from optimally executing the most basic SEO strategies.
